After being reassembled back on Faraday's ship, they'll complain about getting shot up, but they'll be ready for the next mission.Īs with most tactics games, you'll eventually put together a core party that will serve you throughout most of the game. When a robot in SteamWorld Heist takes enough damage, they fall to pieces in and are removed from the mission at the expense of receiving any XP - a solid compromise that is also consistent with the world's lore. Heist's established cast allows it to tell a more straightforward story while dispensing with permanent death. As the game progresses, your crew steadily grows to include a Russian bodybuilder, a commando, a redneck, and a number of others - all of them robots with distinct designs and personalities. She is accompanied by Sea Brass, a perpetually put-upon whaler turned space pirate. ![]() Rather than handing you the keys to a complex character creator, Heist puts in you in the role of Captain Piper Faraday, an independent trader rebelling against the Royalist Empire any way she can. Thankfully, friendly fire is mostly not an issue as your party will fade into the background as you take aim.Īnother way in which Heist differs from XCOM is in its cast. It also makes it easier to implement richochets, with sharpshooters able to bounce a bullet off a wall into the back of an enemy, and grenades occasionally rocketing back to blow up in your face. It's a bit of a departure from the usual strategy fare, but it's nice not having to rely on a random number generator to determine whether you can make a crucial shot. In an interesting twist, Heist requires a bit of skill, with accuracy being determined by how well you manually aim your weapon. Like XCOM, SteamWorld Heist also includes a destructible cover system, which is essential if you don't want to get shot up. While initially a bit odd, you will soon find yourself using the level design's verticality to your advantage as you move up or down to get a good angle on your foe. As with its predecessor SteamWorld Dig, it derives much of its charm from its terrific art, which shows no lack of imagination in rendering robots large and small, ordinary and crazy.Īside from its lack of a strategy portion, where SteamWorld Heist differs the most from XCOM is in the fact that it's in 2D. Set in a world that bears some resemblance to Firefly, it is a lively sci-fi adventure in which you travel from station to station earning loot, recruiting new crewmembers, and buying more and more hats. In many other respects, however, SteamWorld Heist differs significantly from its inspiration. This system has served as the bedrock for tactics games for many years now, and it works just as well in Heist's 2D setting, which superficially resembles a platformer. As with XCOM, you have two choices when moving in SteamWorld Heist - you can either move a certain distance and shoot, or you can dash further at the expense of a follow-up action. It's one of the many smaller games to have followed in the footsteps of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which revitalized the market for turn-based tactics in 2012. It's a great example of a host of elements coming together into one wonderful and cohesive package - great art, a strong setting, a distinct personality, and lots of weapons. I think there's a pretty good argument to be made for Steamworld Heist being the best tactics game of the year. No reason in particular other than just because I wanted to. This bow can be decked out any way you want! I’ve always personally wanted to shoot an 80lb bow. From a custom build portal over at the Mathews website to a fully stocked arsenal of accessories. The new Mathews V3 system is littered with options. With Mathew's new two-piece quiver, shooting micro diameter arrows, sight housings made of minimal aircraft aluminum, weight is becoming less and less of an issue for us bowhunters. Clunkier sight housings, quivers that were not carbon fiber are all things of the past. As the weight of the bow has evolved so have our accessories. This makes holding the bow at full draw much less of an effort. But, the newly redesigned riser features an extended position on the lower end that really delivers balance to the overall setup. Fast forward to today where now the Mathews V3 comes in at a weight of 4.29lbs versus the Triax that introduced me to the Mathews brand which weighed 4.4lbs. I could not even fathom (at the time) holding that bow out in front of me for an extended period trying to keep a steady hand on a target while maintaining this beast of a bow out in front of me. I remember comparing the two bows and feeling how heavy the Triax was, to the point of me swearing off the Mathews brand completely. At the time I was shooting a 2018 PSE Drive X, Jake was shooting a 2018 Mathews Triax. In 2019 Jake and I had both drawn early archery bull elk tags. I’m not left trying to torque the bow left or right at full draw, it simply falls into place. I feel more in control as the bow sits perfectly into the valley between my thumb and pointer finger. This bow just sits better in my hand than other previous bow brands. Another design element that I believe has affected my accuracy on a positive note is the grip design. Coupling these two things together has no doubt made me a better, more accurate archer. Simultaneously while I switched bow brands I also went to shooting a Carter “too simple” thumb release instead of a trigger release. In terms of accuracy for the Mathews V3, I strongly attribute that to the dead in hand, zero vibration that you receive from the bow’s design. ![]() Now I realize this is probably a coincidence and not all bows will do this, but it was pretty cool nonetheless. To my surprise, almost all of the pins were dead on for each of their yardages. After taking the bow home I hit the range assuming I would need to do a full sight in. Arizona Archery Club did the general setup and tuning to the bow and got the bow on paper at 20 yards. In fact, after I had sold my PSE Mach 1 I migrated my CBE Engage 5 pin hybrid sight to my new Mathews V3. Right out of the gate this bow was extremely accurate for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() And the more I looked into it, the cooler it was, and I thought, well, I’ve just got to be a part of this.
